Benefits of Regular Physical Activity in Older Adults

Benefits of Regular Physical Activity in Older Adults
The benefits of regular physical activity in older adults are extensive. Regular physical activity reduces risk of cardiovascular disease, thromboembolic stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, obesity, colon cancer, breast cancer, anxiety, and depression. Of particular importance to older adults, there is substantial evidence that physical activity reduces risk of falls and injuries from falls, prevents or mitigates functional limitations, and is effective therapy for many chronic diseases. Clinical practice guidelines identify a substantial therapeutic role for physical activity in coronary heart disease, hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, elevated cholesterol, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, claudication, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Clinical practice guidelines identify a role for physical activity in the management of depression and anxiety disorders, dementia, pain, congestive heart failure, syncope, and stroke, prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism, back pain, and constipation. There is some evidence that physical activity prevents or delays cognitive impairment and disability, and improves sleep.

Meet our Physical Therapist-Susie

Susie Garcia, P.T.

I currently work at our facility located on Jenks Avenue as a physical therapist, and have had the pleasure of being a part of the treating staff at Therapy One since June 2010. Prior to moving to Panama City Beach, I lived in Miami Florida where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2004 from Florida International University and went on to receive my Masters degree in Physical Therapy three years later.
Most of my professional experience involves working with Orthopedic and Geriatric patients in various settings, but I love any opportunity to expand my expertise treating Neurological patients as well. I grew up knowing I would choose a career path that would help people, but it was not until sustaining a knee injury during a high school soccer game that I realized how physical therapists can positively affect society‘s physical health. Every day I strive to provide the best care and up to date knowledge to our patients in order to speed their recovery, encourage better lifestyle choices, and return them to their prior level of function. My hope is that past, current, and future patients continue to improve their overall quality of life after their rehabilitation experience is over.

Meet our therapist-James Cutchin

James A. Cutchin, P.T.A.

I’ve been doing physical therapy here at THERAPY1ONE ever since graduating the program at Gulf Coast Community College in May of 2010. I chose physical therapy as a profession so I can assist others in maintaining and improving their quality of life. I am from Florida, but have been all over the world in different endeavors in my life. I proudly served our country for four years in the United States Air Force. I am married to my lovely wife Robin of 13 years and have two wonderful children Max and McKenna. I encourage others to stay fit, take their vitamins, say their prayers, and enjoy life. I look forward to working with patients and helping them reach their maximum potential.

Meet our Therapist-Laura

Laura M. Smith, P.T.A.

I grew up in Michigan where I attended my first year of college at Washinaw Community College.  In 1992, I moved to Panama City where I met my wonderful husband, we now have two beautiful little girls.
I graduated in 2001 with an AA in General Studies and an AS in Physical Therapy Assistant from Gulf Coast Community College. For three years I worked at an impatient hospital, helping patients recover from their injuries.  I have had the pleasure working with THERAPY1ONE for the last eight years.
Commitment to good health and physical well being has been important to me my entire life.  I grew up watching my mother deal with the side effects from childhood polio. I have always known I wanted to work with people, to help them overcome their injuries.  I am here to support, to teach and to guide you through your recovery.  I look forward to the future, helping bring the importance of exercising to every person I help.
